Road to Health ? High Blood Pressure Drug Risk

A new report is out now indicating that a specific class of pharmaceuticals have a high risk of users developing cancer

Cancer link to common heart drugs - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/10295126.stm

You might be healthier if you begin to educate yourself about more natural ways to resolve high blood pressure - from our Road to Health Care Naturally series

Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) are medications that block the action of angiotensin II by preventing angiotensin II from binding to angiotensin II receptors on the muscles surrounding blood vessels. As a result, blood vessels enlarge (dilate), and blood pressure is reduced.

Examples of ARB drugs include:
  • losartan potassium (Cozaar), 2-butyl-4-chloro-1-[p-(o-1H-tetrazol-5ylphenyl)benzyl]imidazole-5-methanol monopotassium salt. Death is higher in users than placebo for this drug, and it can cause sudden cardiac death. At one point FDA was going to remove it from the market but did not follow though with the action.
  • irbesartan (Avapro), 2-butyl-3-[p-(o-1H-tetrazol-5-ylphenyl)benzyl]-1,3-diazaspiro[4.4]non-1-en-4-one. The manufacturer states that there is "No evidence of carcinogenicity was observed when irbesartan was administered at doses of up to 500/1000 mg/kg/day (males/females, respectively) in rats and 1000 mg/kg/day in mice for up to 2 years. For male and female rats, 500 mg/kg/day provided an average systemic exposure to irbesartan (AUC0-24 hour, bound plus unbound) about 3 and 11 times, respectively, the average systemic exposure in humans receiving the maximum recommended dose (MRD) of 300 mg irbesartan/day, whereas 1000 mg/kg/day (administered to females only) provided an average systemic exposure about 21 times that reported for humans at the MRD. For male and female mice, 1000 mg/kg/day provided an exposure to irbesartan about 3 and 5 times, respectively, the human exposure at 300 mg/day."
  • valsartan (Diovan), N-(1-oxopentyl)-N-[[2 '-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl) [1,1 '-biphenyl]-4-yl]methyl]-L-valine. In studies completed by the manufacturer they state "There was no evidence of carcinogenicity when valsartan was administered in the diet to mice and rats for up to 2 years at doses up to 160 and 200 mg/kg/day, respectively."
  • candesartan (Atacand), (±)-1-Hydroxyethyl 2-ethoxy-1-[p-(o-1Htetrazol-5-ylphenyl)benzyl]-7-benzimidazolecarboxylate, cyclohexyl carbonate (ester)."There was no evidence of carcinogenicity when candesartan cilexetil was orally administered to mice and rats for up to 104 weeks at doses up to 100 and 1000 mg/kg/day, respectively."
  • olmesartan (Benicar), 2,3-dihydroxy-2-butenyl 4-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-2-propyl-1-[p-(o-1H-tetrazol-5-ylphenyl)benzyl]imidazole-5-carboxylate, cyclic 2,3-carbonate. The manufacturer denies any carcinogenicity in tests up to 2 years of length.
  • telmisartan (Micardis),4'-[(1,4'-dimethyl-2'-propyl [2,6'-bi-1H-benzimidazol]-1'-yl)methyl]-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2-carboxylic acid, and, according to the manufacturer, "There was no evidence of carcinogenicity when telmisartan was administered in the diet to mice and rats for up to 2 years." It is important to note that the report found Micardis to be the most at risk drug, and especially for people with diabetes, heart problems, and kidney function issues.
  • eprosartan (Teveten), monomethanesulfonate of (E)-2-butyl-1-(p-carboxybenzyl)-α-2-thienylmethylimidazole-5-acrylic acid . "Eprosartan mesylate was not carcinogenic in dietary restricted rats or ad libitum fed mice dosed at 600 mg and 2000 mg eprosartan/kg/day, respectively, for up to 2 years."

Note that most of the drugs contain a benzene ring, known to be linked to carcinogenesis. Benzene has been linked to aplastic anaemia, leukaemia, and other cancers since reports were published in the Lancet in 1961.

Oddly ABC's reporter/MD did not seem to understand why these drugs would be a risk. I say 'oddly' because as an MD he, like I did in my health professional medical education to countless hours of pharmacology.

Keep looking for that benzene ring in any pharmaceutical drug and you know you may have a risk at hand.

CHANGE: Where we are now

11. To keep people everywhere from deciding their own destinies by means of one created crisis after another and then "managing" such crises. This will confuse and demoralize the population to the extent where faced with too many choices, apathy on a massive scale will result. In the case of the US, an agency for Crisis Management is already in place. It is called the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), whose existence I first enclosed in 1980.

Clear association between obesity and vitamin D deficiency

Calcium, parathyroid health, and obesity

More on a study conducted at Uppsala University has demonstrated that obese people often suffer from serious vitamin D deficiency and poor calcium metabolism. The findings have been published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. According to the researchers, the problem is under appreciated by the health care establishment.

Pecans Foster Healthy Nerves

LOWELL, Mass., June 11 (UPI) -- Eating pecans daily may delay age-related muscle nerve degeneration, U.S. researchers suggest.

Lead researcher Thomas Shea of the Center for Cellular Neurobiology at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell carried out a number of laboratory studies on three groups of mice especially bred to demonstrate a decline in motor neuron function.

The researchers found mice fed a dietsupplemented with ground pecans had a significant delay in decline in motor function compared to mice receiving no pecans. Mice eating the diet with the most pecans -- 0.05 percent -- fared best.

Results were based on how the mice on the control diet vs. those on the pecan-enriched diet performed in specific tests.

The study, published in Current Topics in Nutraceutical Research, suggests pecans contain a high amount of a natural antioxidants that help fight against cell damage.

"These findings suggest regular consumption of pecans may provide significant nutritive and antioxidant benefits for your body," Shea said in statement.

RoundUp? Get Monsanto

UPDATE: 24 September

While most people seem to know about how Round Up affects plants and other agricultural impact, often they are not so aware of how it affects people, and of course wild life.
Here is a new report linking the chemical to birth defects.

UPDATE: 31 August 2010:
"ROUNDUP READY POISONS CROPS & SOIL"
85% of all GM crops are genetically modified to tolerate Monsanto's "Roundup Ready (RR) herbicide. Promoted as being safe, it is now the world's most widely used herbicide.
2 senior US plant scientists now warn that RR poses a major threat to US food production:
Roundup Ready (RR) renders soil infertile.
It strips minerals & beneficial metals from plants, making them more prone to disease & less nutritious.
It promotes the growth of 4 soil fungi: Fusarium, Phythium, Rhizoctonia & Phytophthora, which can cause plant death.
It is toxic to good soil bacteria like rhiozbia, which fixes nitrogen.
It increases toxins in plants - a serious health risk for animals & humans. The toxins in straw from RR- exposed crops can be high enough to make cattle & pigs infertile.
Roundup also threatens all natural non-GM crops exposed to RR on the wind, or grown on soils sprayed with RR in previous years.

14 Percent May Have PTSD: WAR REPORT

For related information please see Veteran's Resources
SILVER SPRING, Md., June 9 (UPI) -- Between 8.5 percent and 14 percent of U.S. soldiers returning from Iraq report either post-traumatic stress disorder or depression, researchers found.

Jeffrey L. Thomas of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, Md., and colleagues analyzed anonymous mental health surveys of 18,305 U.S. Army soldiers -- reserve and non-reserve -- three to 12 months after deployment.

The soldiers were screened for PTSD, depression, alcohol misuse and aggressive behaviors.
"Using the least stringent definition, we observed PTSD rates across Active Component and National Guard study groups, study time points ranging from 20.7 percent to 30.5 percent, and depression rates ranging from 11.5 percent to 16 percent," the study authors said in a statement. "Using the strictest definitions with high symptom rates and serious functional impairment, PTSD prevalence ranged from 5.6 percent to 11.3 percent and depression prevalence from 5 percent to 8.5 percent."

The study, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, shows that at 12 months after combat, mental health problems among veterans do not abate, and in many cases, increase, Thomas said.

"If soldiers who are struggling with serious functional impairment as the result of a previous deployment are deployed again, there is potential that this could impair their performance in combat," the study said. "This has implications for the safety of unit members and mission success."

Birth Control Pill Caused Stroke

Bayer sued over pill that caused stroke in young woman.

What is tragic about this situation is the prescribing doctor failed to address the severe nutritional deficiencies associated with taking the birth control pill, and the effects they have on hormonal disruption.

I have seen this too many times over the years in a wide age-range of women taking the "pill" for various reasons.  Side-effects can be mediated successfully with natural remedies, many prevented with this information.

An actress who is currently an understudy in the Broadway show "Wicked" is suing Bayer, claiming its birth control pill Yasmin caused her to have a stroke when she was 27 years old, the New York Post reports.

Brenda Hamilton, a former Bronx resident who now lives in West New York, N.J., filed a civil suit in the Bronx claiming that Bayer knew the birth-control pill Yasmin posed a greater risk of stroke and blood clots than other birth control pills, but didn't warn consumers.

Hamilton says she was otherwise healthy and had been taking Yasmin for a little more than two years when she suffered a stroke in May 2007.

"I'm pretty angry that this happened to me. I was 27 at the time. I don't think this should be happening to young women. It shouldn't happen to any woman just because they take birth-control pills," she told the Post.

All birth control pills pose some increased risk of stroke and blood clots -- smoking increases the risk of both, according to literature that is included with birth control prescriptions. The estrogen in birth control pills is believed to be behind the increased risk. Yasmin bills itself as a low-estrogen pill that reduces the symptoms

In 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration cited Bayer for overstating the safety of the product in its advertising, according to the Post.

Hamilton's lawsuit is one of about 1,100 filed in the U.S. claiming the pills caused serious or life-threatening health problems. Two class-action suits have been filed in Canada.

A spokeswoman for Bayer told the Post the company would not comment on pending litigation.

Jolly Joints

Regular exercise is essential to preserving your health—and it’s even more important if you suffer from arthritis, since losing excess weight and increasing your strength can help to lighten the load on your joints in the long run. The key is to find supplements that can minimize your exercise routine’s more damaging effects—while still allowing you to reap the many benefits of physical activity. (courtesy VRP)

Glucosamine is one of the most popular and effective answers to this common paradox, with research showing that this cartilage-supporting molecule can significantly relieve inflammation, while improving your joint function and combating degeneration.

Additional joint-protective compounds can work in tandem with glucosamine to enhance its effects—most notably chondroitin sulfate and methylsulfonylmethane/MSM, which can reduce pain and swelling, slow your joints’ breakdown, plus increase flexibility and mobility.
Plus its great for longevity-
In a prospective, cohort study involving 77,719 residents of Washington state, between the ages of 50 and 76 years, who were followed for an average of 5 years, during which 3,577 deaths occurred over the course of 387,801 person-years of follow up, supplementation with glucosamine and chondroitin were each associated with reductions in total mortality (HR=0.83 and HR=0.83, comparing high intake, defined as > or = 4 d/wk for > or = 3 years to low intake). In addition, high intake of fish oil was associated with a reduced risk of total mortality as well (HR=0.83), however the test for trend was not significantly significant. These results suggest that regular long-term supplementation with glucosamine and/or chondroitin may reduce the risk of total mortality.

Chemo Recipients Benefit from Vitamin E

In a new report of a study involving people treated with cisplatin chemotherapy and provided with daily vitamin E, good benefits were found.

Participants were randomly assigned to receive vitamin E supplementation (alpha-tocopherol 400 mg/day) or placebo. Treatment was started orally before chemotherapy and continued for 3 months after the suspension of cisplatin.

The results of our study indicate that vitamin E supplementation significantly protects against cisplatin peripheral neurotoxicity and reduces the incidence and intensity of neuropathic signs and symptoms.

Another important point is that vitamin E supplementation does not interfere with cisplatin antitumor activity.

No side effects were noted in any of the study participants.

Pet Peeve Rant

'Get on Board or Get Left Behind'is the subject of an email I just received, advertising CME for health professionals who are moving into a newer (although not always better) approach to mainstream medicine.

It is sort of the way I feel about the license-required medical naturopaths who ewant to control all of what is now referred to as Integrative, Complementary, or Alternative health care. And they want insurance reimbursement among other things which really serves no real purpose other than turning over your practice to Big Insurance and raising costs to "patients".

I just wonder where these people were decades ago when I was using my herbal, homeopathy, and natural medicine education while learning more in the medical field while becoming an RN and Nurse Practitioner.

They certainly put up a big defense that has just become larger as the years have gone by, and shown total disregard for others who were educated as NDs before the license-rs came along.

It would be so nice it everyone worked together and honored, respected, and supported ALL working for the best of patient care, rather than worry about who's in charge, or who's on first!

FDA takes action against LifeSoy products

FDA takes action against soy-product firm
WASHINGTON, June 7 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says a California maker of ready-to-eat soy products will stop operations until it complies with federal sanitary rules.

The FDA said Lifesoy Inc. of San Diego was accused of preparing, packing and holding articles of food under unsanitary conditions. Officials Monday said the company entered into a U.S. District Court consent decree of permanent injunction that requires the firm to stop manufacturing and distributing food products until it registers with the FDA and complies with federal laws regarding sanitary practices.

Lifesoy makes sweetened and unsweetened soy milk, fried tofu, fresh tofu, soybean pudding and other soy products for human consumption.

The government also accused Lifesoy and its owner, Long Lai, of failing to hold and store foods under proper refrigeration conditions to prevent the growth of micro-organisms.

Stand UP 4 Your Health

Stand Up For Your Health
Physiologists And Microbiologists Find Link Between Sitting And Poor Health

June 1, 2008 — Physiologists analyzing obesity, heart disease, and diabetes found that the act of sitting shuts down the circulation of a fat-absorbing enzyme called lipase. They found that standing up engages muscles and promotes the distribution of lipase, which prompts the body to process fat and cholesterol, independent of the amount of time spent exercising. They also found that standing up uses blood glucose and may discourage the development of diabetes.

You're probably sitting down right now. Well, by the time you're done reading this, you may see sitting in a whole new way!

"Chair time is an insidious hazard because people haven't been told it's a hazard," Marc Hamilton, Ph.D., a professor of biomedical sciences at the University of Missouri in Columbia, told Ivanhoe.

That's right -- the time you sit in your chair could be keeping your body's fat burning in park! More than 47 million adults in the United States have metabolic syndrome, which causes obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Biomedical researchers from the say the reason so many of us have the condition is because we sit too much!

"The existing data, by numerous studies, are starting to show that the rates of heart disease and diabetes and obesity are doubled or sometimes even tripled in people who sit a lot," Dr. Hamilton explains. One reason, he says, is an enzyme called lipase. When it's on, fat is absorbed into the muscles, but when we sit down, lipase virtually shuts off.

"Instead, the fat will recirculate in the blood stream and go and be stored as body fat or it can clog arteries and cause diseases," Dr. Hamilton says. And it's not a small amount of fat. Plasma samples were taken from the same person after eating the same meal. When they ate sitting down, the sample was cloudy, but when they ate while standing up, it was clear.

Lead and Your Health

While this is of interest historically, lead exposure remains a serious and oft over-looked problem to the people in Idaho's Silver Valley. It is Toxic America
The Secret History of Lead
Since the virtual disappearance of leaded gas in the United States (it's still sold for use in propeller airplanes), the mean blood-lead level of the American population has declined more than 75 percent. A 1985 EPA study estimated that as many as 5,000 Americans died annually from lead-related heart disease prior to the country's lead phaseout. According to a 1988 report to Congress on childhood lead poisoning in America by the government's Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, one can estimate that the blood-lead levels of up to 2 million children were reduced every year to below toxic levels between 1970 and 1987 as leaded gasoline use was reduced. From that report and elsewhere, one can conservatively estimate that a total of about 68 million young children had toxic exposures to lead from gasoline from 1927 to 1987.

Haldol and your shrinking brain

Drug for schizophrenia causes side effects by shrinking part of the brain.

My comments: Just think of the number of people diagnosed with Alzheimer's being prescribed Haldol, a fluoride-based anti-psychotic, and the reports associating brain shrinkage with the diagnosis.
Additionally, the severe side effect from Haldol is known as Tardive Dyskinesia, with symptoms noted in italics below. (One nautral treatment for TD is the use of organic and properly prepared valerian root extract.)

by Amy Maxmen

A commonly-prescribed antipsychotic drug shrinks the brain within hours of administration.

A leading antipsychotic drug temporarily reduces the size of a brain region that controls movement and coordination, causing distressing side effects such as shaking, drooling and restless leg syndrome.

Just two hours after injection with haloperidol, an antipsychotic commonly prescribed to treat schizophrenia, healthy volunteers experienced impaired motor abilities that coincided with diminished grey-matter volume in the striatum1 — a brain region that mediates movement.

"We've seen changes in the brain before, but to see significant remodelling of the striatum within a couple of hours is staggering," says Clare Parish at the Howard Florey Institute for brain research in Melbourne, Australia, who was not involved in the study.

And now come the nutritarians.

SAN FRANCISCO — When one of the most important e-mail messages of his life landed in his in-box a few years ago, Kord Campbell overlooked it.

Not just for a day or two, but 12 days. He finally saw it while sifting through old messages: a big company wanted to buy his Internet start-up.

“I stood up from my desk and said, ‘Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God,’ ” Mr. Campbell said. “It’s kind of hard to miss an e-mail like that, but I did.”
The message had slipped by him amid an electronic flood: two computer screens alive with e-mail, instant messages, online chats, a Web browser and the computer code he was writing.

While he managed to salvage the $1.3 million deal after apologizing to his suitor, Mr. Campbell continues to struggle with the effects of the deluge of data. Even after he unplugs, he craves the stimulation he gets from his electronic gadgets. He forgets things like dinner plans, and he has trouble focusing on his family.
His wife, Brenda, complains, “It seems like he can no longer be fully in the moment.”

Real EMF Danger: Your Brain on a Cell Phone

UPDATE: 16 June -

(CNN) -- San Francisco, California, likely will become the first U.S. city to require cell phone companies to disclose how much radiation their gadgets emit.
The city's board of supervisors voted 10-1 on Tuesday in favor of a law that would require handset makers to post in stores how much wireless radiation their phones give off, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Mayor Gavin Newsom is expected to sign the measure into law.
The city says consumers can use the information to differentiate between cell phones that emit relatively low and high levels of radiation.
Some researchers link those emissions to cancer and brain tumors, although there is no scientific consensus on the matter.
The New York Times compared San Francisco's mobile phone law to those that require food makers to reveal trans fat levels.
"It's information that's out there if you're willing to look hard enough," Tony Winnicker, a spokesman for the mayor, told the Times. "And we think that for the consumer for whom this is an area of concern, it ought to be easier to find."
The mobile phone industry opposes the new law, saying that science has shown cell phone radiation is not harmful to people.
"Rather than inform, the ordinance will potentially mislead consumers with point-of-sale requirements suggesting that some phones are 'safer' than others, based on radio frequency emissions," John Walls, a spokesman for the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA), told The Chronicle.
A landmark study on the potential health effects of cell phone radiation found no conclusive evidence that the emissions are harmful or that they are safe.
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission says cell phones must not have a "specific absorption rate" of more than 1.6 watts per kilogram. That's a measure of "the amount of radio frequency energy absorbed by the body when using a mobile phone," according to the FCC.
Information about radio frequency emissions from cell phones already is available online. The San Francisco law would put that information in front of customers in stores and would require mobile phone retailers to provide additional safety-related information to consumers.

By Fiona Macrae

Lead researcher Lloyd Morgan said there could be a 'brain tumour pandemic' unless people changed their patterns of mobile phone use.
This would include texting rather than holding the phone to the ear.
People who talk on mobile phones are up to five times more likely to develop brain tumours than those who stick to landlines, academics have warned.
They say a number of previous studies into mobile phone safety 'substantially underestimated' the cancer risks and that tumours are much more common on the side of the head to which the mobile is held than on the other side.
After reanalysing the earlier studies they concluded that the risk of these tumours is between 10 and 500 per cent higher with long-term mobile phone use.
Lead researcher Lloyd Morgan warned yesterday that the findings raised the possibility of 'a brain tumour pandemic' unless people change their pattern of mobile phone use.
Mr Morgan, of the Environmental Health Trust, a U.S. campaign group, spoke out after re-examining the figures from six previous studies.
These included a Swedish one which originally concluded that people who used mobile phones for at least ten years were 3.9 times more likely to develop an acoustic neuinroma  -  a non-cancerous tumour  -  on a nerve near the ear to which they held their phone compared to those who rarely or never used the devices.
The reanalysis, designed to take into account flaws in the design of the study which could have skewed the results, put the increased risk at 4.9 times.
Another study had concluded that ten years of mobile phone use raised the odds of 'same side' gliomas  -  aggressive brain tumours  -  by 60 per cent.
But if the new technique is applied, the risk is raised by 100 per cent, a scientific conference in Seoul, South Korea, will hear today.
Reanalysis of a third study concluded that every 100 hours of mobile phone use raises the odds of meningioma, another common brain cancer, by 24 per cent.
The results of some of these studies were included in the world's largest study on mobile phone safety.
Released to much fanfare in May, the Interphone project concluded that ten or more years of mobile phone use raised the risk of a glioma appearing on the side of the head to which the phone is held by 21 per cent.
The British scientists involved in the study said the figures were flawed and urged people not to worry.
They pointed out that some of those who took part claimed to have used their mobiles for more than 12 hours a day ten years ago  -  something which was 'incredibly implausible'.
In addition, brain growths can affect memory, meaning some of those with tumours may have over-estimated how much they had used their phone.
Mr Morgan's team crunched the same figures but tried to factor in the effect of various design flaws.
This showed the increased odds of 'same side' gliomas to be 51 per cent  -  more than twice as high as estimated in the May study.
However, British cancer experts said predictions of a 'brain tumour pandemic' were overblown. Ed Yong, of Cancer Research UK, said: 'Even after the minor adjustments reported in this new analysis, the results from the overall Interphone study are still either not statistically significant, or right on the borderline.'
John Cooke, of the Mobile Operators Association, which represents the industry, said a World Health Organisation fact sheet last month stated that 'to date, no adverse health effects have been established for mobile phone use'.

FDA and Avandia: Ethics Lacking

FDA-Sanctioned International Diabetes Drug Trial Is Unethical and Dangerous
“Surely no patient would willingly participate in a trial in which they have a substantial likelihood of taking a drug that, in the opinion of a large group of experts, has no role in present day therapeutics because of its risks,” Wolfe said. “The trial shouldn’t continue because the question has been answered. If the trial continues, the health of thousands of patients will be jeopardized. It is unethical to continue this trial. As unethical as it is in developed countries such as the U.S. and Canada, it is even more unconscionable to subject people in developing countries such as Chile, Mexico, Colombia, Latvia, Pakistan and India to a drug known to be more dangerous than the drugs it is being compared to.”

Pleasant Suprise, Spectacular Product

It is not often that I go to the point of being a great fan of a nutritional supplement, especially when I think we are too far away from the roots of natural health care.
With vitamins and herbs very well blended with an enzyme blend, I can't say enough about the product that surprisingly appeared with my mail today.
This formula works well for many applications, like pain, inflammation, arthritis, circulation, reducing C-Reactive protein, improving fibrin metabolism, recovery from sports and other injury, and to improve the general healing process.

Dental X-rays could increase the risk of thyroid cancer

Any X-ray ( ionizing radiation) carries with it a risk of cancer.

X-ray exposure is cumulative and over all carries with it a real increased risk of developing cancer.  This includes medical x-ray, dental x-ray, chiropractic x-ray, mammogram, airport scanners, and EMF exposure from microwave cooking, WIFI, digital TV, cell phone and antenna exposure.
The thyroid gland, in the neck, is sensitive to ionising radiation, especially in children, but the potential risk posed by dental radiography is often ignored, researchers said.
In a study of 313 cancer patients, scientists from Brighton, Cambridge and Kuwait found the chances of developing cancer rose with increasing numbers of dental X-rays.

Avoid Many Drugs When Taking Tamoxifen

If you are being prescribed Tamoxifen it is very important to be aware - and make sure your provider is very aware - that combining it with certain other drugs  can reduce the effect of treatment.

An excerpt from a Medscape CME article on this new report states:

" New recommendations extend previous work that singled out paroxetine and fluoxetine as drugs to avoid in women who are already taking tamoxifen, as reported by Medscape Oncology, and they include certain antipsychotics, cardiac drugs, and medications for infectious diseases.
Which medications should be avoided in the setting of tamoxifen? This important clinical question is asked by physicians and patients on a daily basis in clinical practice, say the authors of the review. They are all from the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota; the senior author is Matthew Goetz, MD.
This team has been at the forefront of research into tamoxifen metabolism, which occurs in the cytochrome P450 system, primarily by the rate-limiting enzyme CYP2D6. It is clinically important because the drug exerts its beneficial effects through its active metabolite (endoxifen), and any interference with the metabolism of tamoxifen leads to lower blood levels and less protection against breast cancer.
Previously, this team used CYP2DP genotyping to identify poor and good metabolizers of tamoxifen, who respond, correspondingly, either poorly or well to treatment with tamoxifen, as previously reported by Medscape Oncology
Medications to Avoid
Now the team has reviewed the medical literature for evidence of drugs that are strong inhibitors of CYP2D6; these should not be prescribed with tamoxifen because they interfere with its metabolism and result in lower blood levels of the active metabolite.
"We recommend that potent CYP2D6 inhibitors be avoided in women receiving tamoxifen," the authors state, adding that there is "strong" evidence to support this recommendation.
The authors list the following drugs as moderate to potent inhibitors of CYP2D6:
  • antidepressants that act as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or selective noradrenergic reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) — paroxetine, fluoxetine, bupropion, and duloxetine
  • antipsychotics — thioridazine, perphenazine, and pimozide
  • cardiac drugs — quinidine and ticlopidine
  • medications for infectious disease — terfenadine and quinidine
  • miscellaneous medication — cinacalcet."

Coprescription of tamoxifen and medications that inhibit CYP2D6.

Department of Oncology, Mayo Clinic, 200 1st Street Southwest, Rochester, MN 55905, USA.

Abstract: Evidence has emerged that the clinical benefit of tamoxifen is related to the functional status of the hepatic metabolizing enzyme cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6). CYP2D6 is the key enzyme responsible for the generation of the potent tamoxifen metabolite, endoxifen. Multiple studies have examined the relationship of CYP2D6 status to breast cancer outcomes in tamoxifen-treated women; the majority of studies demonstrated that women with impaired CYP2D6 metabolism have lower endoxifen concentrations and a greater risk of breast cancer recurrence. As a result, practitioners must be aware that some of the most commonly prescribed medications coadministered with tamoxifen interfere with CYP2D6 function, thereby reducing endoxifen concentrations and potentially increasing the risk of breast cancer recurrence. After reviewing the published data regarding tamoxifen metabolism and the evidence relating CYP2D6 status to breast cancer outcomes in tamoxifen-treated patients, we are providing a guide for the use of medications that inhibit CYP2D6 in patients administered tamoxifen.

More on Soy Risk and Your Health

For many years I have been active in educating people about the risks of soy.  This especially relates to the concerns I have had regarding processed soy such as TVP and even soy milk (most frequently the Silk brand).  One major concern is the false idea many have that soy is good for everything that ails you.

A new law suit furthers my conviction that soy should be very limited in your diet and if used should be in fermented forms only.

New Drug, New Risk

Today it was announced that the FDA approved this new genetically engineered drug for osteoporosis.  AMGEN is certainly looking forward to it being a "blockbuster" and generator for big profit.

My hope is that it is a wake-up to women who need to have much better information about what they can do to prevent and treat bone loss issues in a more natural and nutritional way.

Vitamin D is certainly important, some use of calcium supplementation (natural sources are better like horsetail, nettle, etc), better overall nutritional support, avoiding calcium-depleting soy, weight bearing exercise, adequate hydration, and customized natural care.
Denosumab is known to cause significant suppression of bone turnover and this suppression may contribute to the occurrence of osteonecrosis of the jaw, a factor that raised concern at an FDA advisory panel last August.

Other common side effects reported with denosumab include back pain, pain in the extremities, musculoskeletal pain, high cholesterol levels, and urinary bladder infections.

Serious adverse reactions include hypocalcemia, serious infections, including infections of the skin, and dermatologic reactions such as dermatitis, rashes, and eczema. from MedPage Today

Cataracts From Antidepressants? Study: 22,000 U.S. Cataract Cases May Be Due to SSRI Antidepressants

By Daniel J. DeNoon, WebMD Health News
March 12, 2010 -- SSRI and SNRI antidepressants raise the risk of cataracts by about 15% -- enough to cause 22,000 extra cataract cases in the U.S.  each year, Canadian researchers suggest.
The study does not prove that antidepressants cause cataracts. And even if the finding is confirmed, the risk to an individual taking antidepressants is small.
But these widely prescribed drugs may pose a vision risk in elderly patients, suggest Mahyar Etminan, PharmD, and colleagues of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.
"This study showed for the first time that SSRI use may be associated with an increase in the risk of cataracts," Etminan and colleagues conclude.
The researchers analyzed data collected from 18,784 cataract patients and 187,840 comparison patients between 1995 and 2004. All of the patients had heart disease and had undergone treatment for blocked arteries. Their average age was 73.
Only patients currently using antidepressants -- not those who had taken them in the past and stopped -- were at increased risk of cataracts. Even so, only 8.5% of cataract patients in the study had taken SSRI antidepressants at any time.
Not all SSRI antidepressants were found to increase cataract risk, although this may be because not enough people in the study were taking them for the researchers to detect a risk. Risk was found for three different antidepressants:
  • Luvox raised cataract risk by 39%.
  • Effexor raised cataract risk by 33%.
  • Paxil raised cataract risk by 23%.
  • Overall, use of any SSRI antidepressant raised cataract risk by 15%.
Assuming that 10% of Americans take SSRIs, that the increased risk is 15%, and that 1.5% of cataracts in the U.S. are caused by antidepressants, the researchers calculate that SSRIs may cause 22,000 extra cases of cataracts each year.

How Antidepressants Might Cause Cataracts

How could antidepressants cause cataracts?
SSRI antidepressants work by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain. (Effexor is not strictly an SSRI, as it boosts norepinephrine as well as serotonin. - NB from NHN: These are called SNRIs)
Etminan and colleagues note that the lens of the eye has serotonin receptors -- switches that activate cellular functions. Animal studies show that serotonin can make the lens of the eye more opaque and lead to cataracts.
If the Etminan findings are confirmed, SSRI antidepressants would not be the first drug to increase cataract risk. Oral and inhaled steroids and beta-blockers have also been linked to cataract formation.
The Etminan study appears in the March 7 online issue of Ophthalmology. Pfizer, the maker of Effexor, and Abbott, the maker of Luvox, were contacted for comment but were unable to reply in time for publication.

Short on Nutrients

As reported in the London Daily Express, 1 June,  dietitian Dr. Carrie Ruxton and researcher Dr. Emma Derbyshire of Manchester Metropolitan University have reviewed published data in the journal "Nutrition Bulletin."

Their review identified serious nutrient depletion in specific age groups.

50% of girls aged 11-18 years were found to be short of magnesium; one if four lacked adequate amounts of zinc; 30% are short of potassium; 16% are short of iodine; 50% lack iron

In women aged 19 - 30 years 20% lack iron; 11% are short of vitamin B2; 80% in this age group are short of vitamin D.

Two thirds of those over age 65 are deficient in vitamin D.

Paxil and Effexor: Higher Risk of Miscarriage

Study Links Antidepressant Use and Miscarriage
A 68 percent increase in the overall risk of miscarriage in pregnant women using antidepressants
Scientists at University of Montreal report Monday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal that women taking the drugs most often prescribed to treat depression and anxiety — including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) and the older tricyclics — had a significantly higher risk of miscarriage than a matched control group of women who did not take antidepressants. The study is the first of its kind to analyze which antidepressants and which doses are most likely to be associated with spontaneous abortion. Led by Anick Bérard at the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Montreal, the research team also documented that two SSRIs, paroxetine (Paxil) and venlafaxine (Effexor), are associated with the greatest risk.
