Nutrition and Environment Acknowledged as Cancer Cause by Major University

For decades, going back to the late 60s, I've been an advocate of the philosophy that cancer is an emotional and nutritional dis-ease.  As time progressed I have seen cancer become an industry and rely on a limited number of "standardized" treatment schemes.  Sadly these have done nothing for prevention or cure, and certainly there has been little change or any real new ideas or therapy in mainstream medicine.
Just this morning a colleague of mine, a man who was one of the early orthomolecular pioneers, sent out this from of all places, Johns Hopkins.
I am sure many will be interested because this is what we in natural health over decades have been saying.
Some years ago I leaned from a close friend that his daughter had cancer. Her doctor told her these things but also said not to tell who told her or he could get in trouble (Fred Hutch in Seattle - and Seattle was the place where the draconian WA DOH went after a great doctor who had been following this back in the 70s, saving thousands, he lost his license and and retired from practice.)
Our organization offers the Kelley Method which is nutritional and developed in the 1960s for liver and pancreatic cancer, now shown to have an 83% positive result.
NB: We do not suggest green tea as mentioned in this article as it is linked to pancreatic cancer. We also suggest you NEVER cook or heat in a microwave. We say skip the soy.
FINALLY!!! News from the medical world that makes sense!!!
Thanks Dr. Von!
AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY ('TRY', BEING THE KEY WORD) TO ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHNS HOPKINS IS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY .
Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins:

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they havemultiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patientsthat there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime.

3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.
4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person hasn utritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, but also to environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies,
changing diet to eat more adequately and healthy, 4-5 times/dayand by including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing
cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cellsin the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often
reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from
chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is eithercompromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumbto various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to
mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer
cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

*CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitutewould be Manuka honey or molasses, but only in very smallamounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white incolor Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or  (Celtic)sea salt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the
gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment.
A meat-baseddiet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little other meat, like chicken. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole
grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body intoan alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cookedfood including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide liveenzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down tocellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhancegrowth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (mostvegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some rawvegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed attemperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high
caffeine Green tea is a better alternative and has cancerfighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, orfiltered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tapwater. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of
digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in theintestines becomes putrefied and leads to more toxic buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By
refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymesto attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows thebody's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system
(IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals,EFAs etc.) to enable the body’s own killer cells to destroycancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are knownto cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body'snormal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, orunneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit.
A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warriorbe a survivor. Anger, un-forgiveness and bitterness putthe body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated
environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

1.
No plastic containers in micro.

2.
No water bottles in freezer.

3.
No plastic wrap in microwave..

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals cause cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently, Dr Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.

Just because it comes from a med school doesn't mean it is good advice

I receive the Johns Hopkins newsletters. I receive many others too so I am up to date on what information is going around in mainstream medical channels.  This one was in my email this morning -

Nine Ways to Eat Better With Diabetes
Here are nine ways to change your diet that will help you manage your diabetes better and improve your health. These tips apply to people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, but the specifics of your nutrition management will differ depending on which type you have and should be discussed with a qualified nutritionist.
Diabetes tip #1:  Choose plant-based foods over animal-based foods. Eating a Mediterranean-style diet -- which is high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes and olive oil and low in red meat, poultry and animal fats -- has been found to reduce the need for blood-glucose lowering medications in people with type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes tip #2:  Go for whole grains rather than refined ones. Refined grains such as white flour, rice and pasta don’t offer much nutritional value and can send blood glucose soaring. Whole grains like oat flour, brown rice and whole-wheat pasta, on the other hand, are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
Diabetes tip #3:  Use a healthier spread on bread. Avoid products that contain a lot of saturated fat, like butter and cream cheese, and regular margarine, which contains trans fats.  Your best substitutes are trans-fat-free margarines or those that contain plant stanols or sterols.
Diabetes tip #4:  Get your D from dairy. In addition to providing calcium, dairy products are a good source of vitamin D. Recent research has linked vitamin D deficiency with a greater likelihood of developing serious complications like cardiovascular disease if you have type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes tip #5:  Substitute a sweet potato for a white one. Sweet potatoes recently made the American Diabetic Association’s (ADA) list of “superfoods” and it’s easy to see why: They have a lower glycemic index than regular potatoes, meaning they don’t raise your blood glucose levels as much. They’re also rich in carotenoids, which are important for eye health; the natural plant compound chlorogenic acid, which may help reduce insulin resistance; and potassium, which lowers blood pressure.
Diabetes tip #6:  Cook with canola oil instead of corn oil. Canola oil is low in saturated fat and high in monounsaturated fat, which can lower harmful low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and maintain beneficial high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.
Diabetes tip #7:  Favor fatty fishes. Eating fish that contain omega-3 fatty acids helps to lower triglycerides and raise HDL cholesterol as well as cut down on inflammation in the blood vessels, which raises heart disease risk.
Diabetes tip #8:  Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol taken in moderation can benefit some people and has been associated with longer lifespan. However, alcohol can cause hypoglycemia, especially if you are taking a blood glucose-lowering medication.
Diabetes tip #9:  Shake the salt habit. Excess sodium causes the body to retain fluid, which can raise your blood pressure as well as your risk of heart attack and stroke. Instead of sprinkling table salt on food, try spices, herbs, or a squeeze of lemon; avoid processed foods like jarred spaghetti sauces, luncheon meats, canned soups and condiments.

I get my feathers in an uproar when I read these because -in this one - the information is really not good.

Here's what I sent in as a comment on some but not all of this "health" tip -

I read an article recently about health care providers whose knowledge is sorely out of date, or they just don't keep up with current research. This is the reason I am commenting on some items in your list about diabetes and eating.
Flour is NOT a whole grain.
Many people with diabetes actually have gluten intolerance and therefore it is not a good idea to suggest a processed food like whole wheat pasta.
Margarine regardless of what or how it is manufactured is NOT a health promoting food. The suggestion that plant sterol based fake fat is healthier is vacuous because plant sterols come from genetically modified soy and canola. GMOs cause a range of health problems. Soy in any form except fermented is bad for health. Canola is TOO monounsaturated for health and it IS a transfat as well as being hepatotoxic (not good for people with diabetes. MUCH better to use unsalted butter from dairy with NO rGBH and make it into "spread" by mixing it with olive oil. New research shows that healthy fat includes butter.
Dairy allergy should be evaluated before suggesting dairy as a source for Vitamin D. This is usually low efficacy Vit D2 in milk and it is D3 that is the more effective source. Do a 25 OH and make sure the level is 50-80, 80 is better.
If you undercook white potato it will not have as high of a glycemic index as in over cooked baked potato or mashed etc.
Corn and canola oil are bot more likely than not GMO. Both are sold in plastic and this increases the risk of exposure to xeno-estrogens and increased cancer risk. Canola is a trans fat and hepatotoxic O-9 - too unsaturated for health.
If you choose Celtic salt is is a very health choice and unlike boxed salt it is low in sodium and contains many minerals. Because it is mineral rich you don't use much.
I could write more but this is enough for starters. All I have written is backed by REAL science.
I hope you'll be more of a sleuth when it comes to believing what you read on the internet, even when its coming from what you believe to be a reputable source.

Thinking caps on please.

Propecia and PSA

While there is quite a lot of evidence that the PSA is a very outdated and inaccurate test for this men's health concern, it contiues to be the most commonly used lab test for prostate cancer screening.

On 5 February, Johns Hopkins reports that the hair loss drug Propecia may inaccurately reflect PSA status.
Propecia and Your PSA February 5, 2009
By Johns Hopkins Health Alerts; www.johnshopkinshealthalerts.com

If you're a man who takes the hair-growth drug Propecia, you should let your doctor know before you have your next PSA test, as it could affect the accuracy of the results.

The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test measures an enzyme produced almost exclusively by the glandular cells of the prostate. It is secreted during ejaculation into the prostatic ducts that empty into the urethra. PSA liquefies semen after ejaculation, promoting the release of sperm.

Normally, only very small amounts of PSA are present in the blood. But an abnormality of the prostate can disrupt the normal architecture of the gland and create an opening for PSA to pass into the bloodstream. Thus, high blood levels of PSA can indicate prostate problems, including cancer.

A blood test to measure levels of PSA was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1986 as a way to determine whether prostate cancer had been treated successfully and to monitor for its recurrence. Today, however, PSA tests are FDA approved for prostate cancer detection and are widely used to screen men for the disease.

Now research suggests that the hair-growth medication Propecia (finasteride) significantly lowers a man's PSA level, producing misleading results and potentially masking the presence of prostate cancer.

Propecia is the same medication as Proscar, which is used to control benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The difference is the dosage -- 5 mg per day for Proscar vs. 1 mg for Propecia. Proscar is known to artificially lower PSA levels by about half, and doctors interpreting PSA results in these men compensate by doubling the PSA value. But Propecia's impact on PSA level has not been formally studied until now.

The researchers in the study which was reported in the journal Lancet Oncology (Volume 8, page 21) assigned 355 men age 40-60 to take either Propecia or a placebo (inactive pill) for 48 weeks. For analysis purposes, the men were grouped by age: 40-49 and 50-60. By the end of the study period, PSA levels among men in the younger group had dropped by an average of 40%; in the older group, PSA declined by an average of 50%. Among men taking the placebo, the PSA levels of the younger men had not changed, and the levels of the older men had risen by an average of 13%.

Bottom Line: If you use Propecia, be sure to let your physician know so that your PSA results can be adjusted accordingly.
