We have known...Thank you so much for posting this. We have known of the risks of CT scans especially in children for some time, and I am always surprised how little the general public seems to be aware of those risks. A study nobody I speak with seems to have heard of, was published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology last year (Andrieu et al). In that study it was found that girls that carry the BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation for breast cancer were four times as likely to develop breast cancer if they had chest x-rays prior to the age of 20. A chest x-ray obviously exposes individuals to much less radiation than a CT - but can have a profound effect. And, since most girls have not been tested for a genetic predisposition to breast cancer, we need to assume everyone is at risk. When I was in private practice I was always surprised how liberally these studies were used - physicians even ordering chest x-rays before seeing a patient based on a symptom of coughing. These studies can save lives - but I thank you for educating the public lest they cost lives used inappropriately. <BR/><BR/>Lynne Eldridge MD<BR/>Author, "Avoiding Cancer One Day At A Time"<BR/>www.avoidcancernow.comLynne Eldridge M.D.https://www.blogger.com/profile/05592307598309502307noreply@blogger.com
